The Run Like The Wind 10K is a fantastic new road race, along with a family fun run, on the scenic Walney Island.
With its flat profile, coastal scenery, and supportive atmosphere, Run Like the Wind is perfect for experienced runners, first-time 10k participants and families taking part in the fun run.
The fast, scenic, flat 10km two-loop course is ideal for runners chasing a personal best as well as those simply looking to enjoy a relaxed run by the sea.
Course
The race begins at the Round House before heading out along closed roads towards the coast. Runners then join the beach path, where they will enjoy stunning coastal views across the Irish sea along the shoreline of Walney Island.
The route continues along the seafront path heading towards Biggar Bank offering wide open views, sea air and the chance to run alongside the island’s famous wind turbines. After completing the first loop, runners return past the start area to begin the second lap before finishing on the front by the West Shore Club.

PRIZES:
There are prizes for first 3 in male and female and to all Vet +40 categories. Team prizes (CORRECT CLUB VESTS TO BE WORN) for male and female – first 3 to count. Medals to all fun runners & 10k finishers. The awards ceremony will take place as soon as results are available and results will be posted on RunEvents and our website/fb page.
COURSE:
This is a flat, fast course through minor roads on Biggar Bank Walney Island, through to Sandy Gap and to Biggar Village via Thorney Nook Lane. The route is open to the public so be aware of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. In line with UKA rule 240 S5 the wearing of headphones or similar devices (other than those medically prescribed) is not permitted. Runners should keep to the left-hand side of the road, using pavements where possible and follow instructions given by marshals, as there are sections of road where there are no pavements. [please note you will be asked to keep right on Thorney Nook Lane]
We do not permit running with dogs or buggies and the route is not suitable for wheelchair users. Maps of the courses are available to view at the West Shore Bowling Club on the day and on our website
ENTERING:
10k (minimum age 15)
• Pre-entry: £17 EA affiliated club runners, £20 Non-EA affiliated runners (a small online registration fee will apply). Closing date is Friday 3rd July
• On the day: you can register from 8.30am in the West Shore Club at a fee of £25.
On the day entries are not guaranteed an event t-shirt.
Please remember your valid England Athletics number to be classed as an affiliated runner.
RACE VENUE:
West Shore Bowling Club Biggar Bank LA14 3YF. Follow the A590 all the way into Barrow in Furness at the Park Road roundabout, carry straight onto Park Road, at Craven Park Roundabout take the 2nd exit on to North Road [A590] . Turn right onto Bridge Approach and then turn left at the promenade. Follow the road round until the coast and then take a left onto Biggar Bank road. The race headquarters are 400 meters along this road

RACE PARKING:
Please follow parking signs & marshal directions. The car parks for runners and spectators are situated at Walney Secondary School [LA13 3JT] and Park Vale La14 3NB , please note the latter is approx a mile from race start. There will also be parking on the streets around the race headquarters i.e Ocean Road.,
REGISTRATION:
Registration opens at 8.30am & will close 30mins before each race.
• Pre-entered runner numbers will be available for collection at the West Shore Bowling Club, chip timing will be included in the race number
• Please bring your own pins where possible – pins will also be available if needed to attach your number to the front of your running top. Ensure the number is clearly visible to race marshals. Do not pass your number onto somebody else without notifying Registration to ensure that race results are correct and for safety/medical reasons.
• Please follow EA guidelines and fill in the medical information on the back of number and your emergency contact number.
FACILITIES:
Toilets are available in the club with further toilets situated in the walney football club just off Sandy gap.. There are changing rooms in the football club. Unfortunately, there are no lockers for baggage. The West Shore Bowling club has a bar where drinks can be purchased.
MARSHALS, WATER STATIONS & FIRST AID:
Marshals will be at all key parts of the course including turns and junctions. There will be 2 water stations; one just after 2 miles on Thorny Nook Lane and a further water station on Sandy Gap Lane. First aiders will be at the start/finish and at Sand Gap and Biggar Village. If you get into any difficulties on the course, please alert a marshal who will get help for you. If you need to drop out of the race and can make your way back, please let one of the marshals know and notify a race official at the finish area. This is to ensure we can safely account for everyone that started the race.
FUN RUN MILE:
Anyone can take part in this event but under eights must be accompanied by an adult who should also enter (free) and receive a number (it helps with results). You can pre-enter on line or register on the morning at the Fun Run registration desk. Entry fee is £5. The course is from the round house with a loop around Sandy Gap.. Medals will be given to all junior runners
Refunds
Organising a race incurs considerable costs which are met a long time before race day and so individual refunds will only ever be issued at the Race Organiser’s discretion. For a refund to be considered, full details must be emailed to us for consideration within a reasonable time frame of the event.
We do not refund any admin fees that were applied on top of the base Entry fee paid.
Cancellations
We hold the rights to amend/cancel any aspect of an event at late notice. Cancellation will only ever be a last resort for us, and we will always take direction on event cancellations from government agencies (e.g. the Met Office for weather related incidents) and the National Governing Body concerned, in addition to our assessment of the local conditions.
In the event of any cancellation, if it possible to reschedule the event to a different date in the same calendar year then all entries will be automatically transferred to the new date. Deferrals and transfers will be permitted for the rescheduled event.
Where an event cannot be rescheduled, committed contractors will be paid and remaining funds will be offered as partial refunds.
